Faculty feature: Shinnar is developing cultural intelligence

In the International Journal of Management Education, research from Dr. Rachel Shinnar, a professor in the Department of Management at Appalachian State University, examines how Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) boosts students’ cultural intelligence—especially for those with limited international experience—while noting the additional workload for instructors.

That scholarly impact on global learning the recognition Shinnar has received for advancing international engagement in her students.

In recognition of her global leadership, Shinnar received App State's 2025 Global Leadership Award.

"Dr. Shinnar is a transformative leader in advancing global learning at App State. She has designed and led short-term study abroad programs to Spain, Cuba, and France, while also mentoring colleagues in developing similar opportunities. Through her innovative Collaborative Online International Learning courses with partners in Taiwan, Israel, and Germany, Dr. Shinnar has opened meaningful pathways to global engagement for students who may never travel abroad. Her internationally co-authored, multilingual research and frequent presentations in Europe further extend App State’s global reach, but her greatest impact is reflected in the students whose lives she has changed by inspiring curiosity, expanding perspectives, and fostering a deep commitment to global understanding."
